Can Stress Be Causing My Acne?

At some point or another, we are all going to experience stress. However, is your stress showing up on your face?

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Centennial wants you to know what to look for when it comes to acne, as well as ways you can reduce your breakouts.

How Common Is Acne?

In short, it’s really common. In fact, most people will experience it at some time in their lives, whether as a teen or as an adult.

Males are more likely to develop acne as a teen, while females are more likely to experience adult acne due to hormonal fluctuations. Acne can affect the skin in multiple ways.

Signs of Acne

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Small, red, tender bumps
  • Pimples
  • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin

Can Stress and Anxiety Cause Acne?

While there are many more causes of acne than stress, stress can certainly play a role in acne breakouts. When you are stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. If cortisol levels are raised, then you are at an increased risk of acne breakouts.

As a result, learning ways to better manage your stress can reduce your risk of your skin breaking out. There are also other ways you can keep your skin clear of blemishes.

Ways to Prevent Pimples

  • Wash your face regularly.
  • Moisturize after washing.
  • Use over-the-counter medications to treat acne.
  • Limit makeup use in some cases.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
