It’s cold and flu season, but there are also other illnesses at play—including bronchitis.
Each year, around 10% of the United States population visit the doctor with bronchitis, accounting for some 10 million office visits. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Castle Rock wants to share some insight about the condition, including its symptoms and how it’s treated.
Who Gets Bronchitis?
That’s a trick question—anyone can get bronchitis. This inflammation of the bronchial tubes has two types, acute and chronic.
Both types can cause a full range of uncomfortable symptoms. Because the condition can worsen quickly, it’s important to seek prompt medical attention.
Symptoms of Bronchitis
- Production of mucus
- Shortness of breath
- Slight fever
- Chest discomfort
Can Bronchitis Be Prevented?
In most cases, yes. Bronchitis is normally a viral infection, so you can take steps to make getting it less likely.
Boost your immune system and keep it strong by getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, not smoking and getting plenty of sleep. Practice healthy hygiene habits, too, by washing your hands regularly and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces.
Treatment of Bronchitis
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Get lots of rest.
- Take OTC medications to alleviate symptoms.
