What Can I Do for an Eye Injury?

An eye injury can happen at any time—and often more easily than you might suspect.

That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Bronx Webster Ave. wants to you to know what you can do to help prevent eye injuries this summer.

What Are the Most Common Eye Injuries?

Eye injuries are common. In fact, around 800,000 eye injuries occur each year in the United States. But the good news is—nine out of 10 of those injuries are preventable.

There are many different types of eye injury, including corneal abrasions, objects in the eye, chemical burns impacting the eye, eye swelling or bleeding, and fractures of the orbital bone surrounding the eye. If an eye injury occurs, seek medical attention since prompt care is needed to ensure further damage isn’t incurred.

How to Prevent Eye Injuries

  • Avoid certain toys, such as pellet guns or anything that uses a dart.
  • Wear the proper activity-specific eye protection.
  • Keep objects like rubber bands, fish hooks and paper clips away from children.
  • Stay away from flying debris.

What Would an Eye Injury Look Like?

It’s not always completely obvious that an eye injury has occurred, particularly when it comes to kids. But being aware of some common signs of injury can help you know when to seek medical attention.

If an eye injury has occurred, a person may have difficulty opening up the eyelids, the eyelid may be cut or torn, or there may be blood visible in the white portion of the eye. You may also see enlarged pupils, and the person may have blurred vision or other difficulty seeing.

What to Do for an Eye Injury

  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eye.
  • Do not apply pressure to your eye.
  • Try not to remove anything from your eye that looks to be stuck.
  • Avoid using ointment or medication before seeing a physician.
  • Use a patch over the eye until receiving medical attention.
