The Time Has Come to Quit Smoking

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Lung Association, smoking accounts for more than 80 percent of lung cancer deaths in the United States. In fact, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death among Americans. Use this month to take action—and to finally quit smoking once and for all with the help of these tips!

Just Say “No!”

When it comes to smoking cessation, first things first. You must be ready. While you can have friends and loved ones supporting you on your journey toward being a nonsmoker, only you can be the one who truly decides that you’re ready to quit smoking for good. Are you ready?

Take note of when and where you smoke the most. Do you always have a cigarette with your morning coffee? By understanding these “triggers,” you can prevent them and help limit your smoking urges. For example, have your coffee at work instead of at home or in your car. This way you’ll be unable to have a cigarette while drinking your morning cup of joe!

For most people, stress seems to lead to smoking. Is stress a reason to smoke for you, too? Instead of smoking your way to calmness, try an activity that is more healthy. Take up meditation, attend a spin class, go for a run, write in a journal, etc. By trying out a different activity rather than smoking, you’ll be more apt to grab your running shoes instead of your lighter the next time a stressful event occurs.

Most importantly, keep yourself busy! You don’t want quitting smoking to be all you can think about. Therefore, tell your loved ones and friends that you are quitting and need their help. Schedule dinner dates and get-togethers throughout the week so they can help keep you accountable. Also, try to switch one urge for another. For instance, every time you have the urge to smoke, do some sit-ups, go for a walk, perform jumping jacks or even eat a handful of almonds. Who knows? Not only can you come out of this a nonsmoker, but you might just end up in the best shape of your life!
