Summer Safety: Lyme Disease & Tick Information

Summer has almost officially started, which means outdoor activities are almost in full swing. AFC Urgent Care Baytown wants to remind everyone to be safe while outside this summer & to be on the lookout for tick & the potential diseases they spread.

If you are going to visit a tick friendly environment, one that is damp, wooded & full of vegetation, it is extremely important to be prepared. Wearing long sleeved clothing & pants is a great method for protecting your body from ticks. Apply insect repellent is another great method for preventing tick bites. Use repellents containing DEET on your body & clothing, & use repellents containing permethrin on your shoes & equipment. The most important safety tip to remember is to CHECK YOURSELF FOR TICKS when you return inside. In order to prevent ticks from entering your home check your clothing & pets as well.

It is important to remember that even if you apply these strategies, tick bites can still occur. If you have been bitten by a tick follow these tips to make sure you get the medical assistance you may need.

  • Remove the attached tick in a quick & correct manner – Using fine-tipped tweezers is a good way to ensure you remove the tick from your body. If the tick has been attached for under a day, you are not at a great risk for contracting Lyme disease, but there are other transmittable diseases you may at risk to.
  • Monitor your body– The main symptoms of Lyme disease are fatigue, fever & a rash typically in the shape of a bulls-eye pattern. Even if you do not think you have been bitten by a tick & are experiencing similar symptoms it is important to get medical help! These could be the first signs of Lyme disease & if left untreated Lyme disease could be fatal.
  • Go to your local AFC Urgent Care – If you are experiencing any symptoms of Lyme disease, it is important to get help as soon as possible! AFC Urgent Care is here to make sure you receive all the necessary treatment to get you back on your feet.
