Why Are Falls So Common for Older Adults?
That's a bit of a complicated question, actually. Our increase of falling increases as we get older for many reasons, including decreased mobility, diminished balance, certain health conditions and some medications.
But fortunately, in many cases, falls can be prevented by taking some advanced precautions to make the living space more senior-friendly.
Fall Prevention Basics
- Clean up clutter.
- Remove tripping hazards.
- Install handrails on the stairs and in bathrooms.
- Make sure all living areas are well-lit.
- Wear non-slip shoes.
Can Not Getting Enough Sleep Cause Falls?
Yes! Not getting enough quality sleep can contribute to many different health issues, including an increased risk of falling.
That's because when the body doesn't get enough sleep, the body is fatigued and the mind is foggy, making decision-making much more challenging and causing mistakes. Older adults should aim for between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.
Habits for Quality Sleep
- Stick to a regular routine.
- Take a warm bath before bedtime.
- Drink less fluids right before bed.
- Unwind with a book or by listening to soft music.
- Avoid afternoon naps.
- Eliminate caffeine before bed.
